Weight loss is generally thought of as a personal responsibility. Get moving, make better choices, blah, blah, blah. While it’s true that the work is individual, the root cause is not.
The modern world is constructed to work against our best efforts. Constant suggestions to eat, food that is designed to keep us eating, social occasions revolving around indulgence and the expectation to participate in not only the event, but the consumption, are all major contributors to obesity.
For all these reasons it’s time to stop eating packaged foods. All of them. ‘Healthy’ snacks’? No. Yogurt with as much sugar as ice cream? No. Frozen diet meals with some added sugar by a different name? Nope.
The opportunities to load our food with sugar have boomed. As some experts have long proposed, this seems to be the issue. The shift has not happened by accident. As Jacques Peretti argued in his film The Men Who Made Us Fat, food companies have invested heavily in designing products that use sugar to bypass our natural appetite control mechanisms, and in packaging and promoting these products to break down what remains of our defenses, including through the use of subliminal scents.
