I might have painted myself into a corner. Writing about permanent weight loss is either hubris or delusion. I like to think a good life has a bit of both.
What I mean by permanent is that my system works… with mindful adherence. Losing weight and keeping it off is a lifelong endeavor, mostly because we can’t opt out of living in an over-fed world.
In my case, I skirted the line until I was firmly on the other side. Happy hours, parties, social events, calming nerves for my talk. I made false bargains with myself about indulging (I’ll work it off tomorrow, be good the rest of the week) and it added up quickly. I wish I could eat and drink as I like, but that’s just not possible. It’s for the best to accept that.
No one gets all the things.
Some strategies I use to get back on the straight and narrow:
  • Stop the recriminations. Humans make mistakes.
  • Get clear on my overall health goals. Why is it important to keep the weight off?
  • Plan a week of meals that are proven winners in weight loss. Beans, salads, lean protein, whole grains.
  • Look at restaurant menus and make my selections before I go. Ditto on planning to drink, or not.
  • Schedule a variety of exercise activities, a long hike or a new workout.
  • Use a ‘fresh start’ mentality to get excited about change.
  • Scrutinize my eating for places I went off-track. The last few weeks I incrementally started eating more and more dried fruit which is high in sugar and calories.
  • Weigh myself on the regular.
  • Treat myself like I would a friend, be nice.
I have trips and adventures planned that require fitness and the wearing of a bathing suit, two excellent motivators.
Tell me, how do you get back on track?
