I write thoughtful self-help

I’d love to be the sort of person who exercises for virtuous reasons. Even vanity isn’t enough to get me going on low-energy days. Just once, I’d like to leap out of bed well-rested and dive right into a workout.
Never happens.
Plus, I like my morning routine; coffee, stretch, read. It’s quiet in my home and I relish that peacefulness. Then I think of all the great things I can do with my day that don’t involve getting exercise. This isn’t hard, I have a great imagination.
I recently ran across this excellent passage in the Dear Polly column that changed my thinking:
We know that fitness is crucial for all sorts of things, but that is rarely enough to get most of us going, me included. At least, when I think about larger things like disease prevention and heart health.
Thinking about exercise as a way to regulate our emotional lives on a daily basis? Gamechanger.
Even if that takeaway doesn’t resonate with you, getting clear on the reasons you must get off the couch and get moving brings clarity and purpose to exercise. Something concrete and important that makes perfect sense to you.

PS. I’ll be back on track with a new principle next week. This week I’m preparing a speech for Creative Mornings. Wish me luck 🙀
